Napoleon Phillips – 1943-2024

Napoleon Phillips was born April 8, 1943 the fifth child of Seatrice Bernice Reid and Andrew Jackson Phillips. Napoleon departed this life on Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Yvonia, Charlene, and Ura Lee Phillips, and Hope Phillips Beasley; and brother, James Phillips.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy Williams Phillips, who will cherish his memories; as well as his siblings, Earl Phillips of Little Rock and Carolyn Phillips Garret (Sam) of Lopatcong, N.J.; as well as a host of nieces and nephews and cousins.

His high school years were interrupted by the desegregation of Little Rock Central High, and after the closing of the Little Rock schools, he completed his senior year in Pine Bluff. Napoleon later celebrated as a member of the 1961 Class of Horace Mann High School.

After graduation he served in the United States Army, receiving medals for National Defense Service and Good Conduct. After his enlisted service, Napoleon attended and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Arkansas AM&N (now University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff), Class of 1966. A proud alumnus, he was recognized in 1999 as a Heritage Club Member, and in 2019 as a Century Club Member for his annual fundraising contributions.

At his passing, Napoleon served as a charter member of the Kinship Group Inc., spearheading the annual Homecoming Tailgating event. Napoleon concluded his career with the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences after 60 years of dedicated service. Throughout his adulthood he was a family photographer, avid fisherman and golfer. Participating with Pro-Duffers USA, Inc., he and Dorothy traveled as hosts and competitors, with Napoleon receiving numerous awards.

Viewing is Monday, July 1, 2024, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at Ruffin & Jarrett Funeral Home. The funeral ceremony will be Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Greater Second Baptist Church, 5615 Geyer Springs Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72209. Interment will be at Arkansas State Veterans’ Cemetery, 1501 Maryland Ave. North Little Rock, Ark. 72120.

  • I am so sorry hear of your loss. Napoleon was a great person with much spirit. I worked with him for years at UAMS. He always had words of encouragement for the younger employees. He will be greatly missed. My condolences to you and the family.
